October 2025 : Skater of the Month

This month we have a very special skater here to tell us her story and bring awareness to a very important topic— here’s Double Oh TuTu, a longtime DDD member, and hardworking pirate from the High Sea Haughties!

“This October is such a special month to me. It’s the month for Domestic abuse awareness and also my 15 year anniversary of when I started Roller Derby. A lot of people don’t know this, but I was living in a women’s shelter for DV survivors with my daughter, when I found this sport.”

“I got my first skates when I was 5 and just always skated! I even car hopped at Sonic all thru highschool. I was living in Florida in 2010 when I caught a game with the Beach Brawl Skater Dolls and they played Jax City. I saw Stephanie Bratz jamming laps backwards and I decided right there I could do that! Along the years I have had many ups and downs, but because of the roller derby community, I have never faced it on my own. I do believe my most successful times in life are when I have been a part of the Dallas Derby Devils.”

“My teammates and coaches have been such a support system to teach me to work through my trauma, be strong, healthy, sober, and most importantly, feel safe. Some people take Martial Arts or something similar but I chose Roller Derby as my self defense activity. At Dallas Derby Devils we also have the opportunity to play coed and learn how to effectively communicate and work as a team. Obviously I was apprehensive of having guys on the track and I’m still not always crazy about it. But I do love getting to learn from some of the greatest coaches that genuinely just want to see us grow and be our very best!”

“This year I have stepped up with leading the league as Promotions Chair. Basically I get to organize all parties and marketing events. Even after all these years, you can still find me on the track playing with the All-Stars and the High Sea Haughties.”

Do you have any advice for someone in a similar situation looking for help from sports?
“It takes a village and we are all here to support you with more than just skating. You just gotta show up, do the work and don’t be scared to ask for help. Side note, if you’re thinking about joining us? Just do it! We are so much more than some weirdos on squads skating left and hitting each other. We truly are a family.”
