November 2018: Skater of the Month

Kibbles N Blitz #73, Death Row Rumblers

What prompted you to get involved in roller derby?

I'd reconnected with an old friend from high school and she invited me to see one of her games. I'd kinda vaguely heard of roller derby before but never really thought about it, so I came to watch her play and I fell in love. She'd invited me to see her game in May and I was signed up for the Underworld session starting in June, I think.

How did you come up with your derby name?

I couldn't come up with anything, it was awful. But at like one in the morning, half-asleep, in the shower, my brain supplied me with Kibbles n Blitz and it was just about the dumbest thing I'd ever heard so I just had to do it.

Do you have a favorite derby memory?

A big one for me was when I got drafted. Not only did I get picked up by the Rumblers, who have been nothing but encouraging and immensely helpful, I also got to see two amazing women, whom I'd befriended during our time in Underworld, get drafted to their teams as well. It was wonderful and kinda crazy watching us go from wobbly baby deer to actual derby players.

The sport seems highly physical. Have you ever gotten injured?

So far, so good. I've gotten the usual bumps, scrapes, and bruises but most of my injuries seem to take place off the track. My family is really concerned I'm going to break my nose. Like, weirdly concerned. They're not very worried about the rest of me, though. Just my nose.

What position are you most comfortable playing?

I'm getting more comfortable with blocking, but I'm still learning so who knows what's going to happen from here.

If you could choose one skill in roller derby to perfect in an hour, what would it be and why?

Hockey stops are currently the bane of my existence. It's embarrassing to watch, really. I'm working on them and it would be amazing if I were able to get them down in just an hour, but as that's not happening, I'm just gonna keep practicing.

Do you have any pre-game rituals?

It was completely unintentional but some time in July or August, I realized that I'd had Chipotle as a pre-game meal before every game this season. So I just kept doing it.
